This page explains what information Theatre and Chardonnay collects when you visit, why, and what you can do about it. I’ve kept it in plain English. If anything here isn’t clear, get in touch through the contact page.
Who I am
Theatre and Chardonnay (www.theatreandchardonnay.co.uk) is a personal blog about amateur theatre, written by me, Nicola Tuxford, in the Long Eaton area of the East Midlands. I’m responsible for the personal information collected through this website.
Analytics and cookies
I use Google Analytics to understand which posts people read and how they find the site. It’s added through Google’s Site Kit plugin for WordPress.
- It only runs with your permission. When you first visit, a cookie banner asks whether you’re happy with analytics cookies. Until you accept, Google Analytics is told not to store analytics cookies on your device.
- What it collects. Pages viewed, how you arrived (for example from a search engine), the type of device and browser, and an approximate location based on your IP address. I see this as anonymous totals, not as information about you personally.
- Changing your mind. Clear the cookies for this website in your browser and the cookie banner will appear again on your next visit.
Google processes this data under its own privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy. Google keeps analytics data for the retention period set in my Google Analytics account.
The cookie banner itself is run by the WPConsent plugin and stores a small cookie to remember your choice.
Comments
If you leave a comment on a post, I collect what you type into the comment form (your name, email address, optional website and your comment), plus your IP address and browser details, which WordPress records to help spot spam.
- Your name, website and comment are shown publicly once approved. Your email address is never shown.
- A scrambled version of your email address (a hash) is sent to Gravatar, a service run by Automattic, to check whether you have a profile picture to show next to your comment. Their privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy.
- If you tick the box to save your details for next time, your name, email and website are stored in cookies on your device for one year.
- Comments and their details are kept until you ask me to remove them, so follow-up comments from the same person can be recognised.
Contact form
If you use the contact form, your name, email address, the topic you choose and your message are saved privately in this website’s admin area, where only I can see them, and sent to me by email so I can reply. I keep messages only for as long as I need them to deal with what you’ve asked, then delete them.
Email newsletter
If you sign up for email updates, your email address and, if you give it, your first name go to Mailchimp, the email service run by Intuit. Mailchimp stores them so I can send you new posts and updates from Theatre and Chardonnay.
- The signup form sends your details straight to Mailchimp. Nothing from it is stored on this website.
- Mailchimp may also record when you signed up and whether you open or click my emails.
- Every email has an unsubscribe link. Once you unsubscribe, you won’t get any more emails from me.
- I keep your details until you unsubscribe or ask me to remove them through the contact page.
Mailchimp processes this information under Intuit’s own privacy policy.
Fonts and embedded content
Some of the fonts on this site are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser connects to Google’s servers and Google receives your IP address.
A few posts include embedded content from other websites, such as YouTube videos. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you’d visited that website directly, so it may collect data about you, use cookies and track your interaction with it, particularly if you’re logged in to that service.
Who your information is shared with
I don’t sell your information or share it for advertising. The only organisations that receive it are the ones described above (Google for analytics, fonts and YouTube embeds; Automattic for Gravatar; Intuit Mailchimp for the email newsletter), my email provider when you use the contact form, and the company that hosts this website, which stores the site, its comments and contact form messages on its servers.
Why I use your information
- Analytics: only with your consent, given through the cookie banner. You can withdraw it at any time as described above.
- Comments and the contact form: because you’ve chosen to get in touch or join the conversation, and I need the details to publish your comment or reply to you.
- Email newsletter: only with your consent, given when you sign up. You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing.
- Spam protection and keeping the site running: to keep the site secure and free of spam.
Your rights
You can ask me to show you the personal information I hold about you, correct it, or delete it. You can also object to how I use it, or withdraw your consent for analytics. Just get in touch through the contact page and I’ll respond as quickly as I can.
If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes to this policy
If the way this site uses information changes, I’ll update this page and change the date at the top.
